Los Stones tocan en el festival Glastonbury, ¿contento?

* No tengo ganas de hacerlo. Los demás, sí. No me gusta tocar al aire libre, y desde ya que no me gustan los festivales. Siempre pensé que no tienen nada que ver con tocar. Tocar es lo que hago en el fin de semana, como ahora. Así me criaron. Pero ése soy yo, en lo personal. Cuando sos una banda… Hacés de todo. Pero Glastonbury es como un sombrero viejo. Nunca me gustó la cosa hippie, por empezar. No es lo mejor que podría hacer un fin de semana, te lo aseguro.

Pero seguramente…

* Lo peor de tocar al aire libre es cuando sopla el viento, si es que sos baterista, porque los platillos se mueven… Y realmente se hace difícil tocar.

Ustedes van a tocar también en Hyde Park este verano (boreal). ¿Qué recordás de la famosa actuación ahí mismo en 1969?

* Ah, bastante. ¡El hotel Dorchester! Era nuestro camarín. Y a mi mujer, que la golpearon con un sandwich viejo. Recuerdo cómo se enojó y no la culpo. Le dieron en la espalda. Se dio cuenta de que era viejo porque le dolió mucho. Y recuerdo la suelta de mariposas. Eso no me gustó, porque la cantidad de mariposas muertas fue superior a la de la batalla del Somme. La mitad salió volando. Y la otra estaba muerta.

Con tantas bandas que tocan en grandes estadios en estos días, parecería que la puesta en escena del show es lo más importante, mientras que los Stones aún me resulta una banda real. A veces tocan bien y a veces… no tanto.

* Mick Jagger es el show. Nosotros tocamos detrás de él. Pero Mick no bailaría bien si el sonido fuese malo. Esto no sucede con muchas bandas porque el cantante simplemente se queda parado. Nosotros siempre nos propusimos tocar bien. No digo de manera técnicamente brillante… El resto es algodón de azúcar, pura espuma.

Dados tus antecedentes en el jazz, ¿no te resultó un poco un retroceso unirte a los Stones?

* Más impactante fue unirme a Alexis Korner. Nunca había tocado con un armonicista. Los Stones eran sólo una presentación mía más, pero luego comenzamos a girar por Inglaterra… Yo hasta pensaba empezar otro trabajo, pero nunca llegué a hacerlo. Me sentía un poco fuera de sintonía con todos los demás, Brian, Mick y Keith Richards, pero Keith me enseñó a escuchar a Buddy Holly y cosas así. Mick me enseñó mucho a jugar con las canciones, las melodías y demás.

¿Fue parte del éxito de los Stones el hecho de que cada uno de ustedes había hecho lo suyo?

* Estoy de acuerdo en eso. Todo es más sencillo y más rápido ahora. Yo quería ser Max Roach o Kenny Clarke tocando en Nueva York con Charlie Parker adelante. No era una mala aspiración. En realidad, significaba tocar muchísimo, trabajar duro. No creo que a los chicos les interese. Pero eso puede ocurrir en todas las generaciones, no sé. Cuando yo era lo que se dice un joven músico, el jazz estaba muy de moda. Era cool saber cuándo salía un nuevo álbum de Miles Davis. Hoy nadie sabe qué discos salen. ¡Especialmente yo! Por culpa de esta cosa (señala el iPhone)… Pero en aquellos días… un álbum: lo conservabas, lo atesorabas.

¿Cuál fue tu principal problema con los hippies cuando comenzó todo aquello?

* No me gustaba la filosofía y su ropa me parecía horrenda, incluso entonces.

¿Qué pensabas del resto de los Stones en la época de Sus Majestades Satánicas?

* Nada, no me molestaba lo que hacían. Brian fue el primero. Lo recuerdo en el London Palladium con su sombrero, su pipa y su cítara… Fantástico. Brian fue el primero que conoció y se hizo amigo de Bob Dylan y de Jimi Hendrix. Era muy divertido en aquellos tiempos.

¿Cuál es tu canción favorita de los Stones?

* Uy … No tengo una, a decir verdad. No es un grupo que escuche mucho.

¿En qué gastás tu dinero?

* ¿Yo? Colecciono cosas.

¿Discos viejos?

* Sí. Hay un lugar excelente en Viena. Colecciono jazz, más que nada. También kits de batería. Tengo uno de los kits de batería de Kenny Clarke, que le dio a Max Roach. Se lo compré a su viuda. Tengo el famoso kit de Sonny Greer, de Duke Ellington... Y libros. No de anticuario. Primeras ediciones firmadas de escritores del siglo XX. Agatha Christie: tengo todos los libros que escribió en rústica. De Graham Green, los tengo todos. También Evelyn Waugh. Wodehouse: todo lo que escribió.

¿No hubo momentos en que quisiste dejar todo esto?

* 

 Sí, antes del show que dimos el año pasado en el O2 de Londres, pero me resultó cómodo hacerlo. Fue divertido, quise decir.

Pero tuviste tus dudas.

* ¿Dudas? Sí, claro, siempre. El rock es un juego de una persona joven. Lo que me resulta difícil es que el 50% es imagen, no mi parte de eso, pero lo es, y a medida que te vas poniendo viejo pensás: “¡Dios mío!” No me gusta mirar las fotos. Bowie se ve muy bien. Por alguna razón hoy todos hablan de él. Otros no han envejecido tan bien. Y algunos tipos que realmente estaban con toda la energía no lo lograron. Te puede afectar mucho. Sin vos saberlo, o sin preocuparte en su momento, porque no te importa cuando tenés 30 o 40 años

¿Sentís alguna vez que tocás mecánicamente en el escenario?

* A veces no estás tan enfocado. A veces tocás bien.

¿Entonces llegará el momento en que digas: “Basta. No va más”?

* Ahora tengo que prestar atención a mi edad, porque si esto sigue por dos años más, tendré 73. Pero lo digo siempre al final de cada gira. Y luego tengo dos semanas de descanso y mi mujer me pregunta: “¿No vas a trabajar con los Stones?”

The Stones play at Glastonbury festival, happy?

* I have no desire to. The others, yes. I like to play outdoors, and already I do not like festivals. I always thought that they have nothing to do with playing. Play is what I do on the weekend, like now. So I was raised. But that's me personally. When you're a band ... You make everything. But Glastonbury is like an old hat. I never liked the hippie thing, to begin. Not the best I could do one weekend, I assure you.

* Worst of playing outdoors is when the wind blows, if you're a drummer, because the plates move ... And really becomes difficult to play.

You will also play in Hyde Park this summer (boreal). What do you remember the famous performance there in 1969?

* Oh, well. The Dorchester hotel! It was our dressing room. And my wife, who was beaten with a sandwich man. I remember how angry and do not blame her. He got in the back. He realized it was old because it hurt a lot. And I remember the release of butterflies. I did not like, because the amount of dead butterflies was higher than that of the Battle of the Somme. Half went flying. And the other was dead.

With so many bands playing in big stadiums these days, it seems that the staging of the show is the most important, while the Stones still I find it a real band. Sometimes you play well and sometimes ... not so much.

* Mick Jagger is the show. We played behind him. But Mick would not dance well if the sound was bad. This does not happen with many bands because the singer just stands there. We always set out to play well. I do not say so technically brilliant ... The rest is cotton candy, pure foam.

Given your background in jazz, is not proved to be a bit of a kick to join the Stones?

* More shocking was join Alexis Korner. I never played a harmonica. The Stones were introduced only mine more, but then we started to turn to England ... I even thought to start another job, but never got around to it. I felt a little out of sync with everyone else, Brian, Mick and Keith Richards, but Keith taught me to listen to Buddy Holly and stuff. Mick taught me a lot to play with songs, melodies and more.

* Me? I collect things.

* Yes, there are an excellent place in Vienna. I collect jazz, mostly. Also drum kits. I have one of the drum kits Kenny Clarke, who gave Max Roach. I bought it from his widow. I have the famous kit Sonny Greer, Duke Ellington ... And books. No antiques. Signed first editions of twentieth century writers. Agatha Christie: I have all the books he wrote in paperback. From Graham Greene, I have them all. Also Evelyn Waugh. Wodehouse: all she wrote.

Was not there times when you wanted to leave all this?

* Yes, before the show we gave last year at the O2 in London, but I was comfortable doing. It was fun, I mean.

But you had your doubts.

* Questions? Yes, of course, always. The rock is a young person's game.
